10. Payees
Payees Overview
Learn what payees are for, how the payees workspace helps, and when merging or alias cleanup matters.
Payees are the names behind your transactions. They represent people, businesses, or other sources and destinations of money.
In Common Cents, payees are more than freeform text. The Payees workspace gives you one place to keep canonical names clean, set optional default categories, review usage, and merge duplicates when your data starts drifting.
Start here if #
- you want one clean payee name instead of small variations across transactions
- you want a payee to suggest a default category
- you need to review a payee’s transaction history from one place
- you want to merge duplicate payees without losing references
In this section #
What payees are good at #
- keeping transaction names consistent
- speeding up entry with optional default categories
- supporting payee matching during imports when that feature is enabled
- giving you one workspace for cleanup and review
What payees do not replace #
Payees tell you who the money involved. Categories still tell Common Cents what the money is for.
Use payees for identity and cleanup. Use categories for budget meaning.
