Actions

Use the Combo Palette to run common commands such as adding records, saving your file, or opening settings without hunting through menus.

Actions mode is the ! mode in the Combo Palette.

Use it when you know the action you want and do not want to browse to the page first or when you want to search for a possible action.

What Actions mode searches #

Actions mode searches command titles, aliases, and keywords.

That means you usually do not need the exact official label. If you search for the thing you mean, Common Cents will usually surface the command you want.

Good uses for Actions #

  • add an account
  • add a category
  • add a transaction
  • save your file
  • create a backup
  • open settings
  • export data

The kinds of commands you can run #

Common examples include:

  • add actions such as accounts, categories, transactions, payees, and labels
  • file actions such as save, save as, and create backup
  • navigation actions that jump to a page or workspace
  • settings actions that open a specific settings section such as File / Export or Mass Transaction Entry
  • export actions for transactions, budget data, and planning data
  • appearance and workflow actions such as theme changes or default palette mode changes
  • edit actions such as undo and redo

How it behaves #

  • use the arrow keys to move through results
  • press Enter to run the selected command
  • if the command succeeds, the palette usually closes

Disabled commands are intentional #

Some commands only make sense when a feature is enabled or when you are in the right state.

When that happens, the command can still appear, but Common Cents will show why it is unavailable instead of silently failing.

If you already know the action you want, this mode is usually faster than navigating to the screen first.
